13 Membership Committee: Luncheon A s members of the architectural community ourselves, we take pride in working to provide continuing education events that are more than just product demo lunch and learns. An average of 40 people attends each luncheon, ranging from architects to engineers to contractors and interested members of the community. This year we have had two excellent presentations for our lunchtime program that have provided valuable information on and for our area. Our first luncheon of the year was held at the Discovery Museum and featured a roundtable discussion of city planners from Reno and Sparks. Participants included Armando Ornelas (Asst. Community Services Director, Sparks), Sienna Reid (City of Reno), Jeremy Smith (Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency) and Aaron West (Nevada Builders Alliance). Updates were presented on the city master plans, and members of the panel were then asked to respond to questions from the moderator and the audience. Questions included what the biggest constraints on development in the area are, and what we, as architects, can do to aid in the revisions process. We encourage all of our members to be involved as revisions are made to local zoning codes and ordinances, such as the recent discussion on accessory dwelling units. At the second luncheon of the year we heard from Kristen Brown from the State Historic Preservation Office. As development increases in the area, it is important to understand how we can help our clients preserve our historical building resources. Kristen’s presentation explained what the registry of historic places is, and how having a building on the registry can open it up to funding resources for rehabilitation and restoration. Members were also presented with on overview of the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for historic buildings and other design aids to assist in their work. Additional information can be found on the state’s website (www.shpo.nv.gov ) and at the Department of the Interior (www.nps.gov/tps/standards.htm ). We appreciate everyone who has come out to these events this year, and in years past, and look forward to more great speakers in the future. b THINKING OF BECOMING A MEMBER?
