18 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .18 | 2018 | www.aiann.org 2 018 was the third year our chapter celebrated Architecture Week, a series of events intended to bring architecture to the larger public as well as the design and construction communities. We hosted 5 events in April designed to appeal to a wide variety of people. We kicked off the week with an architecture themed game night for the bar-going crowd at the Glass Die. Good clean fun was had by all. Who knew you could play chutes and ladders in compliance with the IBC? For the film buffs out there, BRDI and AIANN presented a screening of the film Columbus, a drama that co-stars the modernist buildings in Columbus, Indiana at the Nevada Museum of Art. We hosted a great panel discussion on urban infill with panelists from our local design community. Being in the room with so many Renoites who care about how our city grows and want to learn how to make it better was very energizing. Attendees left with a lot of food for thought and a better idea of the challenges and opportunities for urban infill in our inner neighborhoods. For good reason, the most anticipated event of the week was the Architectural Bus Tour. This year our bus bounced to Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness by MBA, Rasmus Residence by Jack Hawkins, USAC Building by Van Woert Biggotti, and Center and Pine by Frame Architecture. The tour is the best opportunity around to see new and notable buildings in our area and hear about them from the architects who designed them. For kids and families, we hosted “Design by Discovery” in the workshop at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, giving kids from 5 to 15 the chance to model their own homes. We engaged with a lot of kids who hadn’t given architecture much thought before. They did good work and came up with very original design twists on their homes. Each year Architecture Week gets a little bigger and a little better – next year will be no exception. If any members would like to get involved with Architecture Week 2019, please contact aiann@aiann.org. Thank you again to our sponsors Kahl Commercial interiors, Nevada Builders Association, Lumos and Associates, S3 Development, Frame Architecture, and the Black Rock Design Institute. b Architecture Week 2018
