20 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .18 | 2018 | www.aiann.org can struction O ver 10 teams participated in this year’s CanStruction event at the Meadowood Mall for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Teams from all areas of the community came together to create unique and innovative structures using nothing but cans, a few other packaged food goods, and a bit of mdf. The structures must be self-supporting, and there are strict rules on what can and cannot be used to help keep the structure stable. The event kicked off on Wednesday, March 7th with an all-day build and were then left up to be seen through the weekend until Sunday the 11th. Members of the AIA assisted or where otherwise part of several teams this year, including local contractors and area middle schools. This year’s structures included a Rubik’s cube, rockets, trains, igloos, and others. Awards are given based on various factors related to how the teams used the cans. The community was also invited to vote on their favorite structure through dollar donations. In total, over 23,000 cans were collected and donated to the Food Bank this year. Thank you to all who participated this year. We want to give special thanks to Fred Graham of Worth Group, who has overseen and coordinated this event between AIA and the Food Bank for many years. Thanks for all your hard work, Fred. If you haven’t participated as part of a team for this event in years past, we encourage you to take a chance this next year.
