7 Architecture Matters! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Architects are trained to be leaders, thinkers and problem solvers, sharing aesthetic and technical advice and using interpersonal skills to balance conflicting needs, building a consensus toward a solution. T he economy in Northern Nevada is hitting on all 12-cylinders, or maybe the appropriate analogy is, “charged to the maximum kilowatts”. And while we all enjoy the benefits this brings, we recognize there are challenges that come with it. Attracting a viable workforce and where will they live is at the top of this list. It has been an honor to serve as your AIA Northern Nevada 2018 President. The experience has been rewarding working with the committed individuals that make up the leadership of AIA Northern Nevada. Through this position I have come to appreciate how much volunteer effort goes into providing the benefits each of us reaps as a member of the AIA. Our Executive Committee includes an Associate AIA, Allied, Allied Professional, and Construction Industry Director along with AIA Member Directors and an Office Manager. A coalition not unlike the design and construction teams that contribute to our mutual success. Many thanks to each of you for your support of the organization. We began the year with a Strategic Planning and visioning session intended to gather information from our members, allied professionals, and non-member architects on how our chapter can be more effective in meeting their needs. We’re using this information to generate our 2018 Strategic Plan and guide the chapter as we move forward. Members of the Executive Committee attended several conferences intended to generate effective chapter leadership. These included the AIA western Mountain Region Leadership Conference, grassroots, and the national conference, dubbed A’18. The Annual Business Meeting of the institute was held in conjunction with the national conference. Votes were taken on 16 different resolutions. The most significant, a resolution from the floor, amending the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to require the equitable treatment of design professionals and staff of diverse backgrounds and identities and to prohibit abuse and harassment within our professional community. AIA Northern Nevada advocates for our profession in conjunction with AIA Nevada. The state’s biennial legislative session begins next year. We are working to make some favorable changes to Nevada’s lien law. AIA Nevada is a non-partisan organization; however, we have political interests. Please join me in supporting AIA Nevada’s PAC. Visit aianevada.org to learn more about the PAC and contribute. Each of us can be an advocate for the profession. Get involved with AIA Northern Nevada’s Advocacy Committee, attend county BY DALE E.
