8 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .18 | 2018 | www.aiann.org commissioner, city council, and planning commission meetings and workshops. Individuals trained to be leaders, thinkers and problem solvers, sharing aesthetic and technical advice and using interpersonal skills to balance conflicting needs, building a consensus toward a solution need to have a voice on the issues important to our quality of life in Northern Nevada. Your optimism and vision can have a positive influence on our future. Look for opportunities to participate in shaping it. The most rewarding AIA Northern Nevada initiatives are the Raymond Hellmann and Graham Erskine Memorial Scholarships and the annual Denny Askew Memorial Golf Tournament that is the primary source of funding for these scholarships. These scholarships support Northern Nevada architecture students attending TMCC or an accredited out-of-state architecture program. Welcome to this first annual publication celebrating architecture in Northern Nevada. It is the result of many volunteer hours. Please join me in thanking one standout member of our executive committee, who had a large hand in making it happen, Clare Christensen, AIANN Construction Industry Director and Director of Marketing and Communications at Clark/Sullivan Construction. And please join me in congratulating the Architects who won Northern Nevada Design Awards and whose work is featured in this publication. b T his year, we jump started our chapter’s efforts to be a significant voice in our communities and advocate for better policy on the local level. A small group of members has been meeting to strategize where and how we can best make an impact. In particular, we are focused on influencing the Reimagine Reno process as the principles of the new master plan are codified into the new development code. We hope to help provide for an alternative path to some of the prescriptive design requirements in the code and find ways to support the City’s sustainability and housing affordability efforts. Our renewed efforts could always use a boost from the membership. We miss important opportunities every day to influence local policy. If there is an item in front of any of our local councils or planning commissions that you care about, or would like to bring to the attention of the AIANN community, please email AIANN@aiann.org . b ADVOCACY MESSAGE This ad was produced with support from the Design Professional unit of XL Catlin, offering innovative professional liability programs for architects and engineers.
