13 M embership can be described as “the fact of being a member of a group.” It means belonging, associateship, community, integration and clanship. As an Allied Member and Membership Committee Chair, I greatly value the connection with our northern Nevada design professionals. Although great strides have been made in recent years, I believe there is a lot of room to grow the design professional, Allied professional, Allied and associate membership numbers. The power to influence code changes, permitting, legislation affecting architecture, planning, zoning, sustainable design, and good design cannot be taken lightly, and the AIANN must grow and encourage more members to get involved with advocacy. Lack of involvement is AIANN’s Achilles heel. As an Allied Member, my company and I have always seen the value of supporting the AIA. Construction companies, suppliers and design professionals must work as a team to ensure good design and construction practices. Good sustainable design, planning and construction practices greatly increase the value and harmony of our whole community. Young professionals and their superiors must get involved. Only a small percentage are truly active and involved at this time. That must change. Not being involved can negatively affect future design choices and the promotion of good design, zoning, and planning in our community. The crossroads are now. Please join now or, if you are already a member, become more involved on a committee and be a voice for AIANN’s future. b THINKING OF BECOMING A MEMBER?
