Committee members present were Max Hershenow, Greg Erny, Mark Johnson, and Nate Hudson. We received a total of five applications this year [three Erskine and two Hellmann], close to what was received last year. Compared to last year, where we received no applications for the TMCC Architectural Design Program, this year we received two, a pattern we’d like to repeat and grow for future years. It was noted that these current applicants are fairly young in their academic exposure, and as such, the committee agreed that awarding similar amounts, when compared to previous candidates’ years in college. The intent is to encourage growth within these students and simultaneously allow AIANN to respond to that growth with larger and larger award amounts as these students’ progress through their education. Congratulations to this year’s successful applicants, Grace Brooks, Tomera LaRae, and James Severt. We wish them every success with their education and future careers. After deliberation between members of the committee it was agreed to award the allocated funds as follows: Graham Erskine Scholarship: Grace Brooks $2,000 Montana State University, MT [from Gardnerville, NV] Tomera LaRae $1,500 University of Idaho, ID [from Battle Mountain, NV] Raymond Hellmann Scholarship: James Severt $1,000 Truckee Meadows Community College [from Reno, NV] To attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas b BY NATE HUDSON, AIANN PRESIDENT-ELECT My name is Grace Brooks and I have chosen architecture as my avenue for making an impact. It is through Montana State’s program that Ihavegained an appreciationofdesign and the impact architects can have on theworld around us. Iwant to be an architect because I want to create places where people can tell their stories. I want to blur the boundary between what already exists and what is yet to be home. Iwant tomake an impact on thisworld. Iwant to make an impact in someone else’s life. Iwant towritemy portion of the storyofhumanity. GRACEBROOKS After graduating as valedictorian of Battle Mountain High School’s class of 2016, I decided to attend the University of Idaho to study architecture. Here, I have received many incredible opportunities. Most recently, I was able to study abroad in China. I hope that my career as an architect will continue to broaden my worldview and that my design choices will have a lasting impact on those who encounter them. TOMERALARAE My name is James Severt (Jim) and I am an Architecture student that will be attending Portland State University in the Fall of 2019. I started my journey of becoming an Architect at Truckee Meadows Community College 3 years ago and have worked hard to not only be the best student I can possibly be but also gain the trust of fellow students, peers and professionals as a mentor and resource. I look forward to continuing my education in Portland and then returning to Northern Nevada to someday become a licensed and practicing Architect, using my education to help in bettering my community through the power of Architecture and its wide range of knowledge and skill sets. In my free time I enjoy all types of bicycle activities, having been a past professional Bicycle Motocross, Downhill Mountain Bike and Freestyle / Freeride cyclist I bring a wealth of knowledge from the bicycle world ranging from design and construction to business and competition. I enjoy all outdoor activities that our region has to offer along with museums and art exhibits, andbuilding /construction. I would like to take this time to thank AIA Northern Nevada for the opportunity that has been presented to me with the generous award of the Hellmann Scholarship. It is an honor and privilege to receive this. JAMESSEVERT n architecture as h Montana State’s ign and the impact to be an architect n tell their stories. y exists and what isworld.
