18 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .19 | 2019 | www.aiann.org A rchitecture Week is a series of events intended to bring architecture to the larger public, as well as the design and construction communities held in April each year. This year we hosted five events designed to appeal to a wide variety of people. The Boozy Bocce Social at the Eddy started the week off right, followed a few days later by Egress Analysis of the Puzzle Room. Luckily, everyone made it out OK! Affordable housing is one of the biggest issues facing our community. On Thursday of Architecture Week at Craft, we brought together a panel of journalists, government officials, and members of the affordable housing and development community to discuss potential solutions. While we found no silver bullet, those in attendance gained further insight into the drivers of the affordable housing crisis that can be addressed locally, such as a less arduous regulatory environment for new developments and support for affordable housing projects. In a community lacking a nearby architecture school, such as our is, it is vitally important to strengthen our ties with local high schools and community colleges that provide design-related education. Thus, we were very happy to be able to partner with TMCC’s Spring Fling, showcasing the work of TMCC’s architecture students. Thank you again to the students at TMCC for sharing your excellent work. The signature event of Architecture Week is the Architectural Bus Tour. This year we toured a wide variety of projects, including Downtown Reno Library, the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) Manzanita Hall, 3rd Street Flats, Stella House, and Kulilowski House Renovation. We get so busy as architects that we often don’t get around to seeing and celebrating the new and notable projects in our own backyard. The architectural bus tour is a fabulously fun way to fix that! Each year, Architecture Week gets a little bigger and a little better — next year will be no exception. If any members would like to get involved with Architecture Week 2020 or suggest their project for the bus tour, please contact aiann@aiann.org. Thank you again to our esteemed sponsors Kahl Commercial interiors, J+J Flooring, Humanscale, and Legends Landscaping for the continuous sponsorship of the Architecture Week Bus Tour; we look forward to the continuation of this event for many years to come. b Architecture Week 2019 BY AUDREY DE LA CRUZ AND MAGGIE WILL, AIANN ARCHITECTURE WEEK COMMITTEE MEMBERS
