20 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .19 | 2019 | www.aiann.org can struction O n March 6, 12 teams and 27,215 cans of food came together at Meadowood Mall for one day of fun, working together to resist gravity and to turn ordinary, everyday cans of fruit and vegetables into amazing works of art, while bringing an awareness of hunger to the community. With the collaboration and encouragement of the American Institute of Architects Northern Nevada (AIANN) and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN), teams spent up to 12 hours building CANstructures in the 16th annual Reno CANstruction event. Members of AIANN assisted or were otherwise part of nearly every team this year. The teams assembled from all areas of the community and included students, contractors, community businesses, and a local hotel-casino. In the months leading up to the build day, they schemed and planned how to build and strategically keep their structures upright within a 10’x10’x10’ space and on display for the duration of the four-day event. Gravity weighed heavy on a structure or two, but when all was said and done, the sculptures were amazing, and the event was a huge success. With all of the food being donated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN), teams fill a void on the FBNN shelves that occurs at a critical time of year. The structures were judged and awarded in five different categories, along with a People’s Choice award ($1 per vote) that capped off the event. This year’s structures included a classroom, an octopus, a rabbit in a magician’s hat, a tribute to Wolf Pack Basketball, and a piece of Apple-Pi, among others. Awards are given based on various factors related to how the teams used and assembled the cans. From the People’s Choice voting, the Reno community came through donating an additional $1,156 that went to the FBNN to purchase even more meals for those in need. 2019 BY FRED GRAHAM, AIA, ICC, NCARB Congratulations to this year’s teams who have won in the following categories: • Most Cans: Lending an Arm (or 8) to End Hunger, CustomInk (4,088 cans) • Structural Ingenuity: “Food Pyramid,” Mountain ViewMontessori Adolescent Community • Best Meal: “Apple Pi,” Northern Nevada Math Club • Best Use of Labels: “Agent H,” Hug High School • Best Original Design: “We CAN Teach Others How to End Hunger,” Kendyl Depoali Middle School • People’s Choice Award: “We CAN Teach Others How to End Hunger,” Kendyl Depoali Middle School A special thanks to other participating teams who have worked tirelessly.
