24 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .19 | 2019 | www.aiann.org T he City of Reno, in partnership with the Historical Resources Commission, hosted a Sustainable Historic Preservation Workshop at the Reno Southern Pacific Railroad Depot on Thursday, May 16, 2019. The workshop was followed by the Annual Historic Preservation Awards and Reception. The event brought nationally recognized green building and historic preservation leaders to Reno to present the intersection of sustainable design and historic preservation. Keynote Carl Elefante, FAIA, FAPT, LEED AP, and 2018 AIA President, is principal and director of sustainability for Quinn Evans Architects, with offices in Washington D.C., Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan, and Madison, Wisconsin, and serves as design principal for a broad spectrum of projects including architecture, historic preservation, and community revitalization. As a nationally recognized subject expert, sustainability is the lens through which Carl views all dimensions of architecture. Workshop presenter Ralph DiNola, CEO of the New Buildings Institute, has dedicated his professional life to bringing sustainability, green building, and energy efficiency innovation to scale. He’s excited to see the ethic of stewardship extend from historic preservation to sustainability on diverse building types - from iconic buildings to vernacular and modern-era structures. Carl attended Pratt Institute School of Architecture and received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in 1980.
