40 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .19 | 2019 | www.aiann.org ARCHITECTURAL INTERIORS — TMCC - IGT T MCC Pennington Applied Technology Center is located off the main campus on Edison Way in Reno. This Center offers a variety of programs for students to prepare for employment in technical, high-wage and high- demand fields. These programs develop the critical interpersonal and problem-solving skills demanded by the expanding workplace. For over 20 years, this 102,000 square foot facility offers instructional space, meeting areas, networked computer labs, corporate training rooms, a resource center, smart classrooms, year-round programs, and high school/college programs. Applied Technologies include: air conditioning, construction, energy, manufacturing, transportation, and unmanned aerial programs. This project involved a 102,000 square foot interior re-design that included additional spaces and re-purposed spaces to accommodate current and future curriculum demands. This tilt-up facility was originally a nondescript warehouse open bay structure, and much of the context is office/industrial. TMCC transformed the original building with very little budget available in the 1980s with a focus on fulfilling space needs vs. school pride and aesthetics. The program for this new phase included adding classrooms, transforming space-use, adding technology labs, adding space for Washoe County High School partner programs, a remodeled and expanded lobby, and a repurposed large shop bay into an open lab that also functions as a presentation space and study lab. The goal was to provide a modern, collegiate new environment that welcomes new students and promotes retention of existing students. TMCC’s mission was to expand classrooms and attract motivated students with technologically advanced systems and curriculum. TMCC asked the design team to bring the building into the 21st century and adhere to a very strict budget for all building improvements. The owner’s program called for a major transformation within a very strict budget.
