8 NORTHERN NEVADA ARCHITECTECTURE .19 | 2019 | www.aiann.org T he American Institute of Architects Northern Nevada Chapter (AIANN) seeks an active role at the state, county, and city levels of government on issues that affect the practice of architecture and the built environment. We interface regularly with our state legislative liaison, Mike Hillerby, to track and influence bills coming through the legislature. This past legislative session, there was lots of discussion on oversight and reorganization of state licensing boards, which we will continue to monitor. On our wish list is to alter lien laws to give architects lien rights, and we will seize opportunities to get that included in future legislation. After the new master plan for the city of Reno was approved last year, work began on rewriting to zoning code to align with the new master plan. For many years, the design community in Reno has had to work under an overly-complex zoning code, land and uses that no longer align with the direction of forward-thinking development, and design guidelines that hamper creativity. The Advocacy Committee is focused on making architects' voices heard on the re-write of the zoning code. Nate Hudson, AIA, and Jack Hawkins, AIA, are currently serving on the City of Reno Planning Technical Working Group (TWG), which was set up to provide design and development community input into the development code rewrite. As of November 2019, the City of Reno has released the first two parts of the draft code language. The first part of the draft code language includes the proposed set of zoning districts, and the land uses allowed in those zoning districts. The second part of the draft code covers development standards. Among many other changes, it appears that we will see simplification in the zoning districts, more freedom in the building articulation standards, more flexible parking requirements, which is good news. We encourage members to get engaged, sign up for updates on the City of Reno’s “Zoning Code RENOVation” website, and provide feedback as further draft code language is released. If you would like to get involved with the Advocacy Committee or if you have an issue that you would like to bring to our attention, please email us at aiann@aiann.org. b ADVOCACY MESSAGE BY AUDREY DE LA CRUZ, AIA, LEED AP This ad was produced with support from the Design Professional unit of XL Catlin, offering innovative professional liability programs for architects and engineers.
